One of the first places women were employed as welders was in shipyards during World War II. The following site describes the Evansville, Illinois Shipyard. Picture 28, taken in November of 1942, shows a group of women welders at the shipyard. Picture 29 is of Evelyn Cox, the first female welder at the Evansville Shipyard.

Although some shipyards, such as the one in Evansville, Illinois, did not employ many African Americans as welders, primarily because of threats of slow-downs by white welders, other shipyards employed African American women as welders. The following site contains a picture of African American women welders building the S.S. George Washington Carver in 1942.
